Remote Wellness Blog—SA Student-run
As a student, I feel like a friend who is not available most of the time. Test anxiety hits me hard, and I panic if I leave things to the last minute. I prefer to study and prepare ahead of time, which often takes most of my day. Yet, maintaining friendships is important. Even if I do not see my friends every day, I make sure to check in with them, sometimes over the phone, sometimes face-to-face.
My friends have become like a second family to me, especially since I live away from home. Those moments are special because they remind me why friendships matter: laughter, connection, and a sense of support.
Here are practical ways for students to maintain friendships while balancing studies and keeping a tight budget.
- Schedule Regular Check-Ins
Even a short message or call can keep your friendship alive. I try to reach out to my friends when I can, whether it is to ask how they are doing or share a small moment from my day. It is the consistency that counts, not the duration. This approach helps maintain emotional bonds, even when study schedules are intense.
- Enjoy Free and Low-Cost Activities
I often meet my friends in spaces that do not cost anything, like walking around campus, studying together in the library, or doing a short workout. These moments not only strengthen friendships but also boost mental wellness. Surround yourself with people whose personalities complement yours, who are kind, and who make you laugh, so you feel recharged after spending time together. Life is already challenging, so cherish friends who bring warmth and support.
- Use Technology to Your Advantage
Sometimes schedules clash, and face-to-face meetups are not possible. I rely on calls, WhatsApp calls, or Zoom sessions to connect. However, I make sure these interactions are intentional, with no endless scrolling. This keeps communication meaningful and stress-free, especially during busy weeks or exam season.
- Combine Social Time with Productivity
Group study sessions or collaborative workouts are excellent ways to stay connected while staying productive. For me, joining a friend for a short study session helps both of us stay accountable while having a little social interaction. These productive moments feel rewarding because you are learning together without sacrificing your friendship.
- Celebrate Milestones Thoughtfully
You do not need expensive gifts to show appreciation. A kind message, a handwritten one, or sharing a small treat goes a long way. I have noticed that these thoughtful gestures, even if small, make friendships feel strong and genuine, especially for students on a budget.
- Set Boundaries Without Guilt
Sometimes friendships can feel overwhelming, especially during exam weeks or project deadlines. I let my friends know when I need focused study time, and they respect it. Setting boundaries protects your mental wellness and ensures that when you do connect, it is meaningful.
Friendships are essential for emotional support, laughter, and shared experiences during student life. By scheduling check-ins, engaging in budget-friendly activities, combining social time with productivity, and setting healthy boundaries, you can maintain meaningful connections without compromising your studies or mental wellness.
